The UVA International Studies Office maintains a list of approved study abroad programs that can be accessed using the program search on this site. This list is approved by ISO in collaboration with UVA academic departments. Its extensive offerings are designed to meet a wide variety of academic interests in diverse geographic destinations while also bearing in mind student support services, and health and safety provisions. Students who want to participate in a program currently not approved by UVA need to petition for program approval.

The petition requires the student to submit detailed information related to the academic content, rigor, and student support services provided by the program. The student must also explain in a brief essay why this program is the best match for the student's academic, personal and professional goals.

Petition Procedures:

  • You are required to meet with an Education Abroad Advisor and are strongly encouraged to meet with your Academic Advisor/DUP/Dean to discuss academic goals, review the listing of approved programs, and gauge the viability of your proposed alternate program.

  • Complete the Petition application by the deadline posted on the top of this webpage.

  • All petitions are reviewed by the Education Abroad Review Committee on a rolling basis upon receipt of a completed application.

  • You will be informed of the Education Abroad Review Committee's decision.

  • If approved, you will then be responsible for applying directly to the program and completing the additional ISO post-acceptance documents on-line. NOTE: Petitions are approved on a case-by-case basis.
