UVA in St. Andrews:
Science for Health Professions

In partnership with the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, UVA is offering a science-focused program for semester and year study abroad. This track is designed for students who are in the sciences and/or those in a pre-health profession track. Students may enroll in the fall and/or spring term at St Andrews in specific science classes, which will yield UVA credit and a grade on the UVA transcript. (This applies only to students accepted to St. Andrews via this partnership. Students on the exchange program are not eligible for direct UVA credit in these science courses). The courses available to take for direct UVA credit are linked in this brochure.

Location IconLocation

Founded in 1413, St. Andrews is Scotland's first University and the third oldest in the UK. For almost six centuries, we have proudly upheld the tradition of academic excellence, attracting scholars of international repute and students from all over the world. Owing to the size of St Andrews, students feel they belong here and enjoy the benefits of studying at a highly residential University where academic and social lives intermingle. The University provides an invigorating intellectual climate in which staff have close contacts with one another and with colleagues in other U.K. and overseas universities and research establishments. All Schools in both the sciences and the arts are actively involved in pushing back the frontiers of knowledge.

Physically, the University is closely integrated with the town; the modern purpose-built library and many academic Schools are located centrally. The growth in physical and mathematical sciences has been accommodated at the North Haugh on the edge of St. Andrews. A modern sports centre with adjacent playing fields and halls of residence are also located in this area.

Course Information
Students at St. Andrews will take a maximum of 60 credits while enrolled. Modules (courses) are available at 10, 20, and 30 Scottish (SCOTCAT) credits. Students on the science track have the option of taking all science modules or a combination of science and one to two non-science modules.

**The Science Modules on the list are taken for direct credit and will receive a grade on your UVA transcript.**
Any other course will be shown as transfer credit received on your UVA transcript.
Because some modules at St Andrews have more credit hours than the equivalent at UVA, students may receive a combination of direct UVA credit and transfer credit for some of the modules as indicated on the list below.

Additional Course information

When choosing which science modules to take, you need to meet with a health professions advisor at University Career Services and have them sign your direct credit St Andrews advising form, which can be found in an open application.

For non-science classes: Students wanting to take honours-level (3000+ level) modules should consult with their education abroad advisor to discuss being able to do so. It is necessary for students to have a fairly strong background in their major subject to ensure they meet the standards other degree-seeking students at St. Andrews at the honours level will have.

Students will also need to discuss credit equivalencies and the transfer credit process with their education abroad advisor, as the UK system is different from the US.
