Program Description:

UVA in Shanghai: Fudan University is offered through the partnership of University of Virginia, Fudan University, and The Education Abroad Network (TEAN). This program offers students the opportunity to spend a semester or year in Shanghai studying Chinese language for direct UVA credit, while choosing from a variety of English-taught electives for transfer credit.

Symbolic of the entire country perched on the edge of incredible change, Shanghai is the epicenter of the China’s growth and development making this an ideal destination to study abroad. Don’t think it’s all business, though. Shanghai also boasts some of China’s most exciting dining experiences, a thrilling nightlife, great galleries and shopping and opportunities for exploration around every corner. Study abroad in Shanghai and experience the excitement of China's most dynamic city.

Fudan University
Founded in 1905, Fudan is consistently ranked in the Top 4 of Chinese universities. The campus combines modern China with the traditions and customs of the university's rich 100-year history. Modern towers complement beautiful Chinese gardens and provide a stimulating and contemplative environment for learning. Located in the Yangpu District, north of Shanghai's city center, the university is serviced by the city's extensive subway system. The train station is just a short walk from campus. Student services include: University ID; dining facilities; on-campus security; sports and recreation facilities including table tennis, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball and an outdoor swimming pool; student societies and sporting clubs; and a library, home to an impressive and growing collection of almost 4.5 million copies of literary works.

Students will live at the Tohee International Student Mansion, which is an 18-story dormitory-style complex located off-campus within walking distance of the university. Fully furnished and including wireless internet, the apartments are ready for move-in as you begin your semester. A unique feature of the program is the opportunity to have integrated housing with local Chinese students also living in the apartments. The city of Shanghai becomes even more accessible with university students to help provide local insight and inform language practice. The language pledge means only Mandarin should be spoken in your house on certain days of the week. This is another fun way to improve the language skills of you and your roommates. A Resident Director from TEAN provides on-site support to the students for the duration of the program.

Course Information
Students will take a Chinese Language course at Fudan University, which is offered at the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced level. The Chinese Language program is designed and guided by UVA Prof. Hsin-hsin Liang and students will receive direct UVA credit.
